Jury convicts man in child-rape case

YOUNGSTOWN

It took a Mahoning County Common Pleas Court jury about an hour Wednesday to convict 26-year-old Brian Griffin on eight counts of gross sexual imposition and eight counts of rape.

Griffin, of Warren, will be sentenced at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday before Judge Shirley J. Christian.

Testimony in the case began after jury selection Monday. Griffin is accused of having sexual contact with a child who was 8 years old at the time between Feb. 1, 2012, and May 31, 2013, somewhere in Mahoning County.

Charges pending; 3 hurt in truck accident

BROOKFIELD

Charges are pending in a two-truck accident that produced serious injuries for three men on state Route 82 at Warner Road Wednesday morning.

The driver of a box truck, Robert Arms, 38, of Tarentum, Pa.; his passenger, Michael George, 41, also of Tarentum; and the driver of a tractor-trailer, Wayne Ayers, 56, of West Middlesex, Pa.; were all transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Arms was stopped at the intersection, northbound on Warner Road at 9:58 a.m. Ayers was westbound on Route 82, about to pass through the intersection, when Arms failed to yield and pulled into the intersection, causing the collision, the patrol said.

The box truck was carrying furniture, and the tractor-trailer was carrying cosmetics. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, but the passenger in the box truck was not.

The crash remains under investigation.

Auto accident injures 1

CAMPBELL

Police, fire and medical personnel responded this afternoon to an auto accident that left one person injured.

A 20-year-old male driver suffered injuries after he ran his vehicle into a utility pole on Gladstone Street between Woodland and Adeline avenues at about 1:40 p.m., Campbell police said.

Ohio Edison also arrived on scene due to damage to the pole. The accident remains under investigation.

Awarding pact to BFI

YOUNGSTOWN

The city’s board of control will have a special meeting at 9:30 a.m. today in the council caucus room in city hall to award a contract for no more than $850,000 to Browning Ferris Industries Inc.

The contract is for waste hauling at the city’s waste-treatment plant.

Arrested on warrants

LIBERTY

Police arrested a woman Wednesday on warrants of felonious assault and domestic violence.

Police said Martika Rodriguez, 24, of Youngstown assaulted a 21-year-old woman who told officers she had been stabbed at a Smithsonian Avenue home Feb. 7.

The 21-year-old woman told police that Rodriguez arrived at the home along with two men. The two women argued over a set of keys and fought, the 21-year-old woman said.

The 21-year-old woman also said she was punched in the face by Rodriguez’s boyfriend, and that Rodriguez had stabbed her in the head and cheek with an “unknown sharp implement,” according to a police report.

Rodriguez is in the Trumbull County Jail on a $25,000 bond. Her case is set for arraignment today.
