Woman’s unorthodox approach helps her get kidney donor
POWNAL, Maine
A Maine woman’s unorthodox approach to finding a kidney donor has paid off.
WABI-TV reports Linda Deming was so desperate for a kidney transplant that she posted signs along the side of the road and advertised from her car.
At least 50 people have reached out to her, and she eventually found two matches. The Pownal woman got the green light from her doctors last week, and her surgery is scheduled for next week.
Her donor is 37-year-old Amber McIntyre, a married mother of four from Kenduskeag. The Bangor waitress says she saw Deming’s story on Facebook. She will meet Deming the night before the surgery.
Deming says she hopes her story will help raise awareness and prompt more people to become donors.
Where is the ‘LOVE’? Philly sculpture moved for rehab
PHILADELPHIA
Philadelphia’s iconic “LOVE” statue has taken a ride to its temporary home while the park named after it gets a multimillion-dollar renovation.
The Robert Indiana sculpture was loaded onto a lift truck Tuesday morning at the now-closed Love Park. It was transported slowly across the street to its new home at Dilworth Plaza, near City Hall.
Perennial tourist attraction Love Park is closed for about a year during the renovation.
The new-and-improved park will have more green space, a new fountain and a food and beverage operation.
However, it won’t have the signature granite slabs that made it a skateboarding mecca. Mayor Jim Kenney has said the granite will be given to skate parks around the city.
The statue itself needs some renovations before being returned to the revamped park.
Pig gets kisses as part of Michigan school’s fundraiser
BLACKMAN TOWNSHIP, Mich.
A pig named Patti got a bunch of kisses as part of a Michigan school’s fundraiser to help out animals.
The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports that last week’s event at Northwest High School was the culmination of an effort to support the Cascades Humane Society. It was organized by students in an economics class at the school in Jackson County.
People contributed money to help select school staff members they’d most like to see kiss Patti during a school assembly. The school’s principal and band director were among those selected, along with the teacher whose class organized the fundraiser.
Combined with T-shirt sales, about $800 was raised and donated. Sixteen-year-old junior Taylor Schutte says it was “a lot of fun” and reflects that “we all love animals so much.”
