Poland township and school district seek renewal of levies
POLAND
Poland voters will see township and school district renewal levies on the primary election ballot next month.
The school district seeks a five-year renewal of a 3.6-mill operating levy originally approved in 2006.
That levy generates $1,369,748 annually and costs the owner of a $100,000 home $126 per year, according to information provided by school district Treasurer Donald Stanovcak.
Stanovcak said renewal of the levy is necessary “to continue with the operations as we have been.”
The school district, which employs 240 people, is operating under a $21,295,597 general-fund budget this year.
The township seeks a five-year renewal of a 2-mill levy for current expenses that generates $245,469 annually. That levy was first approved in 1978.
For 2016, the township is operating under a $5.6 million total budget.
This year, it is projected to spend $1.8 million out of the general fund.
Township Administrator James Scharville noted that the township operates on only seven voted mills, saying, “We haven’t asked for any new taxes since 1994.”
He said the levy renewal is necessary for the township to continue to pay its expenses.
The township employs 21 full-time employees, eight part-time workers and four elected officials. It also hires additional help in the summer.
