Phantoms’ Kolias commits to Union
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown Phantoms defenseman Vas Kolias has made a commitment to play for Union College in the fall.
“Union has a great coaching staff that cares for their players and takes great strides to develop them. When I went to visit, I really enjoyed the campus and knew it was the right place for me,” Kolias said.
Union College plays in the ECAC, and won the 2014 NCAA National Championship under Head Coach Rick Bennett.
The Schaumberg, Ill., native has played in all 45 of the Youngstown Phantoms games this season, tallying 19 points (4G-15A) while logging important minutes on both the power play and penalty kill.
“We are proud of all that Vas has accomplished here in Youngstown, and happy to see him make his college decision,” Phantoms General Manager Jason Koehler said. “He is not only an important member of our team on the ice, but also a leader in the locker room and a great representative of our organization in the community. He will be a great addition to the Dutchmen’s blue line next fall.”
Kolias has played in 98 USHL games, recording 40 points.
Cepin steps down as Fitch girls coach
AUSTINTOWN
Stacie Cepin has resigned as the girls basketball coach for Fitch High School.
“I have decided to pause and step away from coaching high school basketball,” Cepin said Monday. “I feel that I have had a great experience coaching these young ladies at Austintown Fitch High School.
“Over the past seven years I have seen several girls go through this program and grow to be successful young women,” Cepin said.”I thank all of those coaches and also the people and parents who have contributed their time and efforts.”
Cepin’s record with the Falcons was 94-60.
Varejao officially joins Warriors
ATLANTA
Center Anderson Varejao joined the Golden State Warriors on Monday after agreeing to a deal for the rest of the season.
The Brazilian spent 12 seasons with Cleveland before being dealt last week to Portland in a three-team trade that sent Channing Frye from Orlando to the Cavaliers. The Trail Blazers immediately cut Varejao.
Golden State wanted another big man with starting center Andre Bogut nursing a strained right Achilles and key backup Festus Ezeli out until at least late March with an injured left knee.
Coach Steve Kerr said he talked with former Atlanta general manager Danny Ferry about bringing in Varejao.
“He told me Anderson was one of his favorite players he’s had in the NBA as a player or a GM,” Kerr said. “That seems to be the dominant thought from anybody who’s been around him, so he’ll be great in our locker room and he’ll get a chance to play.”
Golden State waived forward Jason Thompson to make room for Varejao.
Blues’ Elliott departs with injury
ST. LOUIS
St. Louis goalie Brian Elliott has left the Blues’ game against San Jose with an apparent injury.
At the 12:59 of the first period, San Jose’s Logan Couture pushed the puck past Elliott for a power-play goal, giving the Sharks a 3-0 lead on Monday.
There was a jumble of bodies in front of the net on the play. Elliott went down to block the shot, and the puck squirted past him.
After Blues trainers came out, Elliott left the ice and went to the locker room.
Jake Allen replaced him. The Blues activated Allen from injured reserve Sunday.
