English Center offers citizenship classes

The English Center, in collaboration with the city schools’ Adult Basic Literacy Education, will offer free U.S. citizenship preparation classes. The classes will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, from March 8 through May 17, at Choffin Career and Technical Center, 200 E. Wood St. Classes will be in the ABLE suite. The classes are designed to help potential citizens prepare for the citizenship test. Classes will cover American history, government and reivew the N-400 naturalization application. MCCTC’s culinary program is elite

The culinary program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center has been selected as one of the 2016 Elite 50 culinary programs by the Sullivan University National Center for Hospitality Studies for the second year. The Elite 50 is an exclusive group of high schools and career and technical schools from across the country that excel in the areas of culinary arts, baking and pastry arts, and/or hospitality management. Research was also conducted to establish schools with strong hospitality enrollment and influence in their community. Students also were responsible for submitting an original recipe with photos or a restaurant management design, two essays, videos, brochures and any additional information about the schools program. Further consideration was given to schools that operated a restaurant as part of the training.

Applications accepted for bar scholarships

The Mahoning County Bar Association Foundation is accepting applications for scholarships to attend law school.

Awards typically are between $1,000 and $2,000, and the application deadline is May 20. Applications are available from the bar association at 330-746-2933, or from Dr. Paul A. Sracic at Youngstown State University’s Department of Politics and International Relations, 330-941-3436.
