Struthers boys capture district title, state berth

A combined three teams and three individual competitors are heading to Columbus on Friday and Saturday for the Division II boys and girls state bowling tournaments in Columbus.
The Struthers boys won the district title with a total pinfall of 4,073 at Roseland Lanes. Juniors Cameron Coppola, Andrew Brabont, Adam Cifra, John Medvec and Jared Sawyers formed the Wildcats’ winning fivesome.
Champion took fourth place with a team score of 3,753. Junior Zach Johnson led his team with a 617 score through three games. Behind him were seniors Preston Shivley, Jake Fritch, Dylan Williams and Joe Martin.
Hubbard’s Caleb Johnson was the lone boys individual qualifier from the area, holding the third-best score of 624.
On the girls’ side, Hubbard took the fifth and last team qualifying slot with a pinfall of 3,131. Michaela Dudley, Alexis Cobbin, Emily Davis, Sabrina Romano and Joetta Reed clinched Hubbard’s state trip
In individual play, Southington’s Susan Decker took first place with a score of 581. Cardinal Mooney’s Brittany Mingo bowled 512 to take fourth place.
The boys will compete on Friday and the girls will go Saturday at Wayne Webb Lanes in Columbus. Competition starts at 10:30 a.m. on both days.
