Boardman’s Aulizia. Dunlany qualify for state meet in Canton

A handful of area swimmers earned automatic bids in the swimming state tournament. At-large bids will be announced today.

In a Division I district swim meet at Cleveland State, Boardman’s Callen Aulizia placed second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 46.49 seconds to qualify for state. Spartans senior Aaron Dunlany also qualified for state with a time of 4:43.70 in the 500 yard freestyle, good for a school-record and third-place finish. Meanwhile, Boardman’s 200 and 400 yard relay teams of Aulizia, Dunlany, Ethan Schwendeman and Kyle Kimerber qualified for state as well. In the 200, the foursome recorded a 3:13.06 (school-record), while it notched a 1:57.52 in the 400.

Austintown Fitch had a state qualifier in Timmy Kubacki, who placed third in the 200 individual medley with a 1:58.51.

Other area top finishers included: Canfield’s Theresa Mikolay in the 100 yard breaststroke (10th, 1:08.73) and Boardman’s Corie Kuras in the 50 yard freestyle (sixth, 24.72, school-record).

In diving, Jefferson’s Sydney O’Donnell won the district title with a score of 488.05. East Palestine’s Faith Anderson earned a trip to state by taking the fifth and final slot with a score of 437.60.
