The Poland library hosted an event for tweens and teens to come in and tie dye their own pillowcase on Jan. 27.
Poland librarians Amanda Kollar and Annette Ahrens led the event and taught the children how to tie dye. Each person was given a white pillowcase, gloves and rubber bands to work with. There were several different colored dyes and various designs to choose from.
“We’ve never actually really tie dyed ever. This is our first attempt at it,” said Ahrens.
There were people who have tie dyed before, while for some this was their first time doing it. The tie dye kit the Poland library used came with rubber bands, the dye and even a tablecloth to cover the table with to prevent a mess.
Kollar had tie dyed a pillowcase previously to give everyone an idea of what the project look like. Before the children started, Kollar explained the processes and told them to pick out the design and colors before they started dying.
Sydney Metzinger attended the tie dye event with her friend and neighbor, Evalyn Hunneyman.
The two girls said they had fun making their own colorful pillowcases. Hunneyman has tie dyed once before, but this was the first time for Metzinger.
“I like that you just kind of make a mess,” said Metzinger with a laugh.
When the children finished their creations, there were snacks available for them to eat after. They could either bring their pillowcases home with them to finish, or leave them at the library for Kollar and Ahrens to finish for them.
