St. Charles School hosted a votive candle prayer ceremony on Feb. 1 at St. Charles Church in Boardman. The ceremony was the first activity of the school’s Catholic School Week.

St. Charles has a Catholic School Week every year for the students and community to participate in several activities. The three words the students focus on during the week are faith, knowledge and service. Dianne Pelini was the chairperson this year who helped put all the different activities together.

The votive candle prayer service was led by Father Rogers. The St. Charles students learned about the history of candles in church and the significance of lighting and praying with candles. All of the students had a special intention they were focusing on for the prayer service.

After the prayer from Father Rogers, Cardinal Mooney students, who were all alumni of St. Charles School, helped the kindergartners, first- and second-graders light a small candle. Each candle was lit for the students’ special intention they mentioned in their prayer.

“The students are able to learn about the light of God and to reinforce by having special intention, then lighting of a candle with their intention with the help of the Mooney students all coming in faith together,” said Pelini.

The students at St. Charles continued their Catholic School Week with a different activity, focusing on faith, knowledge and service, each day for the rest of the week.
