Cops: Ohio man who killed self in museum shot, spray-painted art

COLUMBUS (AP) — Campus police say a former Ohio State University security guard damaged dozens of works of art at a university museum before killing himself last year.

Dean Sturgis shot himself in the head at the Wexner Center for the Arts on Nov. 29.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that campus police released a preliminary report Thursday at the request of the Franklin County Coroner’s Office. It says the 63-year-old Sturgis damaged more than 30 pieces of art by shooting or using black spray paint on them just after the museum opened.

The names of the damaged artworks and security procedural details were redacted. The report says security guards had experienced radio issues, which the university says it’s trying to address.

A final report is expected later.
