University of Toledo to make more cuts amid budget shortfall

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — University of Toledo will make more budget cuts after a lower-than-projected fall enrollment.

The university president said Wednesday the school will cut its operating budget by 1.5 percent this year and trim another 3 percent from the entire budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1. The Blade newspaper in Toledo reports the cuts will amount to about $600,000 this year and around $8.7 million for the upcoming fiscal year.

UT President Sharon Gaber announced the latest cuts in an email to faculty and staff Wednesday. The fall 2015 enrollment of 20,325 students contributed to an estimated $11.5 million budget hole. Gaber in October announced an eight-month hiring freeze to help plug about $5 million of that shortfall.

Pay cuts and layoffs aren’t planned.
