Ohio psych ward patient stabs security guard in neck, abdomen
AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Police say a security guard has critically injured when a psych ward patient attacked him with knives at a northeast Ohio hospital.
Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards says the 54-year-old guard had surgery Tuesday night. His condition wasn’t available, but his injuries were considered life-threatening.
Edwards says the attack happened about 7 p.m. at Summa St. Thomas Hospital. The man was stabbed in the neck and abdomen as the 33-year-old suspect was being taken to St. Thomas.
Other hospital employees restrained the suspect, who has been taken into custody. No one else was hurt.
Edwards says it isn’t known how the suspect got the knives into the hospital. A Summa Health spokesman says the attack was unprovoked.
Charges are expected to be filed.
