The Mahoning Valley’s first major snowstorm is expected to drop as much as a foot of snow in portions of the area before tapering off around noon today.

Most of the area’s population centers – in and near Boardman, Austintown, Youngstown, Canfield, Liberty and Girard – should get 4 to 8 inches that started Monday night, said Eric Wilhelm, chief meteorologist for 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

Western Mahoning County along with northern and western Trumbull County will get the worst of it with 8 to 12 inches expected there, Wilhelm said.

Meanwhile, those in New Middletown, East Palestine and New Castle, Pa., will see a combination of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain, he said. Those areas may only get 2 to 4 inches of snow, Wilhelm said.

“It’s a matter of where you are,” he said. “For most of us, it will be wet snow.”

The National Weather Service in Cleveland late Monday, meanwhile, predicted snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches in the Youngstown area.

There would be additional snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches this morning, and on Tuesday night little or no additional snow accumulation, it said.

The Valley had 9.5 inches of snow during the first 14 days of this month, 11.8 inches for the month of January, and only 0.8 of an inch of snow in December, according to the NWS.

The area got 6.4 inches of snow at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna between last Wednesday to Friday with 3.5 inches falling on Wednesday. That’s the most snow the area has had in a 24-hour period so far this winter.

The high temperature today is expected to reach 35 degrees for the area, according to the NWS.

“The road crews will get a chance to catch up during the day Wednesday,” Wilhelm said.

It will drop to 24 degrees tonight with no more than a half-inch of snow expected for the area.

The Valley could see another two inches of snow on Wednesday, the NWS forecast states.

The high temperature Wednesday is expected to reach 33 degrees and drop to 12 degrees at night, according to the NWS forecast.

Because of the snow, several communities have parking bans in effect. They include Youngstown, Austintown, Boardman, Campbell, Girard, Howland, Liberty, McDonald, New Middletown, Niles, Salem, Struthers and Weathersfield.
