YOUNGSTOWN

Two patients who escaped from the Heartland Behavioral Healthcare Hospital in Massillon and were apprehended by Youngstown police Sunday are scheduled to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court on Tuesday.

Arrested were DeAngelo Young, 22, of Youngstown, and Chad Vanhorn, 23, of Canton. They are being held in Mahoning County jail.

The men assaulted two HBH staff members Sunday morning and escaped in a HBH employee’s vehicle, according to the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

Both men were arrested without incident, according to Missy Craddock, deputy director MHAS.

“We take very seriously our duty to provide a safe environment for employees, patients, and the community through our Regional Psychiatric Hospital system. OhioMHAS is fully cooperating with the Ohio State Highway Patrol” in the investigation of the incident, Craddock said.

Young was at the hospital for restoration to competency to stand trial in Mahoning County on charges of attempted murder, felonious assault, aggravated robbery, kidnapping and theft.

Young was indicted by a Mahoning County grand jury in connection with the Aug. 4, 2015, shooting of Kamron Miller while the victim was in his car near the intersection of Market Street and Avondale Avenue. Miller was paralyzed in the shooting.

Vanhorn was found not guilty by reason of insanity after facing charges of rape, Craddock said.

Both staff members were released after treatment at a Massillon area hospital.

Young and Vanhorn escaped at about 2:30 a.m. and were arrested in a different vehicle without incident by Youngstown police at South and Myrtle avenues.
