YSU slates Women in STEM Careers Workshop for March 5

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The 19th Edward W. Powers Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Career Workshop will take place March 5 at Youngstown State University.

The workshop will expose young women in sixth through 12th grades to career opportunities in science and engineering. Students will have the opportunity to interact with female scientists from the Mahoning Valley and with faculty, staff and students from YSU.

The workshop is designed to address students’ questions. It targets middle- and high-school girls, teachers, counselors and parents. In the morning, students will attend panels where women in science, math, engineering or in health-related professions will answer questions about their careers.

In the afternoon, students will observe, participate in real-life science work and conduct self-assessments. There is no charge for the workshop, and registration may be made online at www.ysu.edu/WIS.

A March 4 lecture series is open to all students and their families. It begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Ohio Room inside Kilcawley Center with Rachel Abrahams, who works in the Air Force Research Laboratory and who invented ultra-high-strength impact-resistant sheets that are used to protect military personnel.

Information is available by calling Diana Fagan in YSU’s Biological Sciences Department at 330-941-1554.
