Coffin found in wildlife refuge; returned to grave
NATCHEZ, Miss.
Hunters in Mississippi found an intact coffin in a wildlife refuge, and authorities returned it to its grave.
Adams County Coroner James Lee told The Natchez Democrat that the coffin apparently floated out of a family cemetery on the refuge during floods in January.
He said he was called Saturday to deal with the coffin, found in the open at the St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge. He said it held the remains of someone who had been buried within the past six months.
Lee said he and the sheriff’s office identified the body, located the cemetery, notified the family, and returned the coffin.
He said the main thing is that they were able to return it to the cemetery in a “in a dignified manner.”
2 charged in robbery gone wrong where arm was severed
NEW YORK
Both people involved in a bizarre botched robbery over pricey sneakers have been arrested after the victim rammed the teenage robber with his SUV, severing his arm, police said Saturday.
Zachary Sam, 17, had arranged online to meet Philippe Pierre to buy a pair of $190 Air Jordan sneakers on a Brooklyn street, police said. But when he hopped into Pierre’s SUV, he pulled out a gun and demanded the shoes for free, according to authorities.
Surveillance footage from the scene shows the teenager get out of the car, put something in his pocket, and walk away with a white plastic bag.
Pierre, 39, drives away slowly, but then makes a sharp U-turn and rams Sam, pinning him under the car and a fence. The teen hopped up and staggered away, his sleeve flapping. The arm and the gun were discovered at the scene, officials said.
Utah teen delivers 900 carnations for Valentine’s Day
SMITHFIELD, Utah
Every girl at a Utah high school got flowers for Valentine’s Day thanks to the generosity of a male classmate.
Seventeen-year-old Hayden Godfrey spent $450 on 900 carnations, ensuring that all 834 females at Sky View High School in Smithfield would get one.
He handed the flowers out Thursday to 50 classrooms.
Godfrey has randomly passed out flowers for Valentine’s Day since he was a freshman, but never to this scale.
The senior told The Herald Journal of Logan that many girls feel depressed if they don’t get anything on Feb. 14.
He told school administrators about the plan a year and a half ago.
The teen worked as a cook and dishwasher at various fast-food restaurants to save up enough money.
