Applications being accepted for YSU Summer Honors Institute

Application deadline is March 4 for the Summer Honors Institute at Youngstown State University, during the week of June 12-17.

The SHI offers gifted and talented high-school students the opportunity to explore and discover new information in a wide range of disciplines.

Courses are developed by university faculty with the dual purpose of introducing students to a specific discipline that is not available to them in a high-school setting and providing activities designed for more in-depth study. Courses also are designed to provide a high degree of student interaction using a variety of hands-on activities. Commuter and residential options are available.

Students are assigned to a morning and afternoon course. Participants spend Monday through Thursday immersed in learning. The courses offered to participants this year include favorites such as Entrepreneurship, Crime Scene Analysis, Rapid Prototyping, Harry Potter, Healthcare in the 21st Century, Documentary Filmmaking, Mathematical Modeling, Thriving in a High Tech World and Social Media.

New classes are International Business, Storyscaping and a returning favorite, Acting Improvisation. Lunchtime includes activities for social and personal enrichment.

On Friday, students participate in learning activities in the morning and are provided information about YSU majors and services during a college fair. The week concludes with an afternoon Friday celebration with course presentations to friends, family members and special guests.

For the fourth year, participants will have the option to reside on campus for the week to extend their learning beyond the classroom.

The cost of the residential component is $350, which includes meals, room and linens. Structured learning activities are offered each night. Students will check in on the afternoon of June 12.

Student eligibility for SHI is either formal identification as gifted and talented or meeting the qualifications for admission to the YSU Honors College. Eligible participants must be entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade during the 2016-17 academic year.

There is an $85 (nonrefundable) participation fee to cover the student lunches for the week. This fee already is included in the residential option. Parking is available in university lots at the daily rate.

Application packets and course descriptions are available on the website and must be received no later than March 4.

The fee may be paid online or by mailing a check or money order with the application. Applications are processed and course assignments made after payments are received. Course assignments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.
