Gabriel continues to shine for Volunteers

Poland High School graduate Erin Gabriel threw three complete games and had 10-plus strikeouts in each of her three outings, totaling 34 for the week as the University of Tennessee softball team competed in the Kajikawa Classic.
Gabriel pitched her third complete-game in as many starts to improve to 2-1. The senior right-hander allowed two runs on five hits while striking out 10 batters. Gabriel has recorded 10-plus strikeouts in all three of her appearances and has 34 total this season.
Tennessee finished the Kajikawa Classic with a 4-2 record and will travel to Clearwater, Fla., next weekend for the Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Foundation Invitational.

Ex- Penguin completes Olympic marathon trial
LOS ANGELES
Former Youngstown State distance runner Laura Thomas-Kaulen was one of 149 qualifiers to finish her Olympic trial marathon Saturday in California. Of the 202 participants who started the race, 53 dropped out. Thomas-Kaulen finished 148th with a time of 3:21:01.
Thomas-Kaulen said she wasn’t concerned about her finishing position, only with finishing the race and not being one who dropped out of the race.
Softball team splits doubleheader

The YSU softball team defeated UMass 9-8 before falling to Charlotte 7-1 in the second half of a doubleheader.
In the opener, Alexandria Gibson went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple while Sarah Dowd hit a grand slam. The Penguins (2-1), scored five runs in the second inning of the opener and led 6-2 after five before holding off the UMass comeback.
Against Charlotte, Miranda Castiglione went 3-for-4 and Cali Mikovich went 2-for-3 with a double in the loss.
The Penguins next play Lehigh on Feb. 26, at the UNC-Greensboro Tournament.
Women’s tennis team drops 2-of-3 in Vegas
Las Vegas
The YSU women’s tennis team beat Southern Utah for their first win of the season before losing to Idaho and UNLV. The Penguins beat the Thunderbirds 4-0 on Saturday, lost 6-1 to the Runnin’ Rebels on Sunday and 6-1 to the Vandals on Friday. In the victory, Sofia Macias won 6-3, 6-1 and Nehel Sahni won 6-1, 6-1.
YSU returns to action on Friday when it plays host to Bucknell at the Boardman Tennis Center.
Men’s tennis team picks up home win

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team won four singles matches to earn a 4-3 win over Carnegie Mellon on Sunday morning at the Boardman Tennis Center. Winning matches were Luke Purser, Bassem El Mekawi, Gabriel Tolesani and Agustin Reyes.
The Penguins (3-5) dropped a tough decision at doubles as CMU (4-2) won two of the three matches. YSU won at No. 2 while CMU won at No. 1 and No. 3.
In singles play the Penguins won all four matches in straight sets. At No. 6, Reyes gave the Guins their first win of the match defeating Tommy Cheng 6-3, 6-1. Soon after at No. 5, Tolesani completed a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kiril Kirkov.
YSU returns to action on Saturday when it plays Temple in a match at the Greensburg Racquet Club in Greensburg, Pa.

South Range hosting annual fund-raiser
NORTH LIMA
The South Range School District is hosting its annual fund-raiser on March 12 from 6-11 p.m. at the Youngstown Shrine Club, 1735 W. South Range Rd.
The venue will be transformed with horse racing themed games, a Queen of Hearts themed 50/50 raffle, basket and live auctions, food and a cash bar.
