Poland Township moves forward with sidewalk project

Staff report

POLAND

Township trustees approved an agreement with an engineering firm for a planned project to add a stretch of sidewalk on Dobbins Road.

MS Consultants Inc. of Youngstown will act as engineer on that project, for which the township is using federal grant funds administered through Eastgate Regional Council of Governments.

The grant will cover 80 percent of the estimated $164,000 construction cost. The township will be responsible for nonconstruction costs and the estimated $32,800 construction cost not covered by the grant.

The sidewalk will begin at state Route 170 and go to the Tuscany development. That project is slated to begin in fiscal year 2018.

In other business at a meeting this week, the board of trustees heard from a citizen concerned about dog tethering. That issue has come before several local governments recently, with animal activists asking municipalities to enact regulations to protect animals from neglect.

The board agreed to consult with the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s office to see what it can do legally.

The next township board meeting will take place at 6 p.m. March 9. The board will have a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. to discuss installation of a lighting district in the Polo development.
