Local 1112 reveals details of local contract, Local 1714 votes Thursday

Staff report

LORDSTOWN

The United Auto Workers Local 1112 has released summary details of its local contract that will be voted on starting Feb. 22.

Local 1112 covers about 2,900 assembly workers at the General Motors Lords-town Assembly Plant where the Chevrolet Cruze is built.

“This was a long, hard- fought negotiation process which resulted in no exiting of work traditionally performed by the UAW and significant gains in local demands,” a UAW Local 1112 notice reads.

The union’s bargaining committee says it fought to keep work traditionally done by UAW members. The union was able to retain all work/departments performed by UAW members including in repair/rework; scrap/salvage and inspection/verification, according to the union’s contract notification.

The union retained all current departmental language in production departments.

The union made gains in health and safety.

In the skilled trades division, the bargaining committee had long discussions with management over “skilled trade’s classifications.” The committee retained the following initiatives: painter classification, mechanical and electrical maintenance, all work related to communication equipment and several others.

The assembly-plant workers will vote Feb. 22 through Feb. 23.

UAW Local 1714, which has about 1,400 members who work at the fabrication plant in Lordstown, will start the 24-hour local contract vote Thursday.

Both Local 1112 and Local 1714 voted in favor of the national agreement with GM in November.

Ninety percent of the Local 1112 membership voted, with 72 percent approving the national pact, which included pay raises across the workforce, improved health care for tier-two workers and an $8,000 signing bonus if ratified.

Eighty-seven percent of the Local 1714 membership voted on the national contract, with 65 percent approving it.
