Judge denies Texas effort against Syrians
AUSTIN, Texas
A federal judge Monday again ruled against Texas in its efforts to stop the resettlement of Syrian refugees, saying that though it would be “foolish” to deny there are risks after the Paris attacks, state officials never have shown an imminent danger to the public.
The decision by U.S. District Judge David Godbey is another setback for Republican leaders in Texas, which was the first state that sued the Obama administration over resettling families from the war-torn country but has failed to halt or even slow the arrival of any new refugees.
Mazda recalls SUVs
DETROIT
Mazda is recalling some SUVs because the fuel filler pipe can rupture in a rear crash and cause a gas leak and possible fire.
The recall covers nearly 237,000 CX-5 SUVs from the 2014 and 2015 model years.
The problem was discovered in crash testing when the pipe ruptured and spilled fuel that exceeded limits set by crash-test standards. Mazda says it has no reports of any fires or injuries.
Honda Civic recall
DETROIT
Honda is recalling about 45,000 newly redesigned Civic compact cars in the U.S. and Canada because the engines can fail and stall while being driven.
The recall affects 2016 Civics equipped with 2-liter four-cylinder engines.
Documents filed by Canadian safety regulators say that a circular clip around the pistons may be missing or was improperly installed at the factory. That can cause a pin on the piston to rub against the engine block and possibly cause engine failure or a fire.
It was unclear if any crashes, fires or injuries had happened.
Possible sarin attack
UNITED NATIONS
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has identified the Damascus suburb of Daraya as the site of a possible sarin gas attack last year, citing blood samples provided by the Syrian government.
In a report to the U.N. Security Council circulated Monday, the watchdog describes an incident Feb. 15, 2015, near the Shrine of Sukayna where government soldiers reported a strange smell and began exhibiting symptoms consistent with sarin gas.
Occupiers’ videos
PORTLAND, Ore.
The last four occupiers of an Oregon wildlife refuge have posted a series of defiant videos in which one of them calls FBI agents losers, shows a defensive perimeter they have built and takes a joyride in a government vehicle.
The videos were posted Sunday on a YouTube channel called Defend Your Base, which the armed group has been using to give live updates. The holdouts are among 16 people charged with conspiracy to interfere with federal workers in the armed standoff over federal land policy that has surpassed five weeks.
