Cervical cancer information

SHARON, PA.

Sharon Regional Health System is offering information about cervical cancer during National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Here are good rules to follow from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Cancer Society to protect against cervical cancer:

Women should begin cervical cancer screening via a Pap test at 21, and women 21 to 29 should have a Pap test at least every three years.

HPV testing should be done only if needed after an abnormal Pap test, and women 30 to 65 should have both a Pap test and an HPV test at least every five years.

Women older than 65 who have had regular screenings with normal results should not be screened for cervical cancer.

Women who are at increased risk for cervical cancer may need to increase the frequency of these screenings. Notably, African American and Hispanic women have a higher incidence of cervical cancer than other ethnic groups.

For information, call Sharon Regional’s Cancer Care Center at 724-983-5800.
