Baby found dead and dog may be the cause

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating after a 4-day-old baby boy was found dead early Sunday morning at the baby’s home in the 3500 block of Valerie Drive.

Lt. Doug Bobovnyik of the Detective Bureau said police were called to the home about 5:45 a.m. and when they arrived they found the baby deceased with a head injury.

Bobovnyik said police are investigating the possibility the baby received the injury from one of five dogs in the home. The Mahoning County Dog Warden’s office did take the dog suspected of causing the injury into custody.

Bobovnyik would not say why police think a dog was involved. He said the injury was not severe, as in a mauling, “but there was surely a noticeable injury.”

Detectives are investigating along with the Mahoning County Coroner’s office.
