Black History Month art show at gallery

YOUNGSTOWN

An art exhibition featuring works by Michael Green and James Thomas opens today at Soap Gallery, 117 S. Champion St., downtown, and runs through Feb. 27.

The exhibition is a tribute to Black History Month and includes works in a range of media, styles and qualities. Admission is free.

Dana faculty in horn recital

YOUNGSTOWN

The Dana School of Music faculty members Stacie Mickens (horn), Brian Kiser (tuba) and Diane Yazvac (piano) will present a free recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Bliss Recital Hall, on the Youngstown State University campus.

The program will include contemporary and classical pieces by John Stevens, Margaret Brouwer, Bach and Mozart.

Derby Girls present Valentines dinner

AUSTINTOWN

Little Steel Derby Girls will have a Valentines Dinner on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Manor Restaurant, 3104 S. Canfield Niles Road. The event will include live jazz, a three-course dinner, a drawing and a silent auction of art made by local artists. Tickets are $30 (two for $50), and are available in advance at the Manor.

Artist to lecture

Youngstown

Youngstown State University’s Department of Art will sponsor a free lecture by media artist Brian House at 5 p.m. Monday in the McDonough Museum of Art on YSU’s campus.

House teaches in the Digital and Media program at the Rhode Island School of Design. Previously, he was a member of the New York Times Research and Development Lab, where his work was recognized by TIME magazine in its “50 Best Inventions of 2011” issue. He has also developed courses at Parsons’ Design & Technology program.
