C.H. Campbell Elementary School kicked off its annual American Heart Association Jump Rope for Heart campaign with a music-filled high-energy assembly Jan. 15. Fourth-grade students, dressed in Canfield Cardinal red and black, put on a jump rope show for their fellow students.

Ronie Haurin, C.H. Campbell physical education instructor, readied the students for their performance.

To start their performance, the fourth-graders entered the gym to Van Halen’s “Jump” while jumping rope. After a brief introduction and a jump rope for heart cheer, the fourth-grade students impressed and amazed the crowd with their jump rope skills.

The students performed individually and in groups to the cheers of their fellow students. Some stunts the students executed were bouncing and passing a basketball to jumping students, jumping on one foot, synchronized jumping, crouching to the floor, jumping rope while jumping a longer rope, twirling while jumping, flipping into a twirling rope, and spinning a basketball while jumping.

Much to the delight of the entire audience, teachers were then asked to join the fun and jump some rope themselves, and they successfully accomplished the task. And the highlight of the day for the student body, and raising the noise level and cheering considerably, was when C.H. Campbell Elementary School Principal Travis Lavery tried his hand at a jumping rope. The cheering got even louder when Lavery successfully executed several jumps and twists.

To end the assembly, the students were shown a video explaining what the Jump Rope for Heart program is all about, and included the personal stories of families who have been helped by the program.

The Jump Rope for Heart campaign is under the direction of Haurin, and the students will jump rope during their scheduled gym class. Students will collect donations for their jumping and turn them in during the week, earning prizes along the way.
