Northern Ireland sells Cold War-era nuclear bunker
BALLYMENA, Northern Ireland
It has no windows, but it offers unrestricted views of Armageddon.
Northern Ireland is selling its Cold War-era nuclear bunker, an underground installation with room for 235 beds that sellers imagine could be transformed into a tourist attraction or blast-proof storage facility.
Journalists took a tour Thursday of one of Northern Ireland’s strangest real-estate offerings. For $850,000, the successful buyer could acquire a 46,363-square-foot grass-topped building discretely situated on 3.74 acres of rolling fields northwest of Belfast.
Northern Ireland’s leaders have decided they can survive without the bunker, which was built in the 1980s to protect key government and legal figures from a Russian nuclear strike. The facility includes a conference room and broadcasting suite. Its existence was a state secret until 2007.
Careening car ends up on roof of Southern California house
PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif.
It’s hard to know what was more amazing: an out-of-control car ending up on the roof of a Southern California house or the driver somehow escaping serious injury despite the wild ride.
Palos Verdes Estates police Capt. Mark Velez said a driver with a medical problem lost control of his car on a residential street Wednesday.
Velez told the Daily Breeze newspaper that the man hit two parked cars, rolled up the driveway of a house, ricocheted off another car and was somehow sent skyward, ending up atop the detached garage of a neighboring house.
Firefighters pulled the man from the car and took him to a hospital, but he wasn’t seriously hurt. No one else was injured.
Police got a crane to pull the car off the roof.
Police: Cat burglar enters Vt. family’s home, takes pet
TROY, Vt.
Vermont State Police have arrested a 54-year-old man in connection with taking a cat from a home.
Mark Frady was charged with burglary and unlawful trespass. He pleaded not guilty Wednesday. A judge ordered a competency evaluation.
Police said Frady stole a cat named “Boots” from a family in Troy after saying he was looking for his cat, “Mason.” They believe he’s behind the theft of two other pets in the area.
Police said Frady was found in the family’s home Saturday and was asked to leave. The family said they have security camera footage of Frady taking Boots.
Police said Frady returned twice. The family said they chased Frady out of their basement after finding him watching TV, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes.
