Every third and fourth Thursday of the month, Boardman Park hosts a Senior Fun Day at the Lariccia Family Community Center. The first Senior Fun Day of 2016 occurred on Jan. 21.
The event is three hours long and consists of different activities for those who come to enjoy. There is a fee of only $1 and with that there is lunch, a craft, exercise, a blood pressure screening and Bingo.
Boardman Park and Senior Independence are in partnership for this event and those who sponsor it are Sunrise Assisted Living, the Blackburn Home and Shepherd of the Valley. There are usually around 70 seniors who attend and come spring, more people will come out to enjoy the nicer weather.
Many people that attend are regulars and come as often as they can. A lot of the seniors also come with a group of their friends.
Having senior fun day gives people the opportunity to get out and socialize with their friends who they may not see often, while also meeting new people.
One of the favorite parts of the day is Bingo. There are three to four games that are played, and they play until there are at least three winners per game.
“It’s a lot of fun for seniors to get out and not have Winter blues, and enjoy a couples hours at the park and out with their friends,” said Boardman Park recreation director, Karen McCallum.
