Diva Donations opens for girls in need

Diva Donations, a formal clothing closet where girls can borrow a gown shoes and jewelry in exchange for a small deposit of $25, which is partially refunded when items are returned or full deposit returned when one hour of community service is provided in the Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull county areas to any 501c3 charity (documentation required) will be open for homecoming, winter formal and sweethearts dances on Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. until noon. No prom wear will be going out at this time. The first prom appointments will be the last week in Febuary. Diva Donations is located at 11836 South Ave. in North Lima.

Newcomers Club to meet on Feb. 9

The February meeting of the Newcomers Club of Canfield will be Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. This month’s meeting is a Line Dancing Lesson at Fred Astaire Dance Studio, located at 5090 Market Street in Boardman. The cost is $10 per person and participants must RSVP by Feb. 7 to Sara Dysert at 330-720-2265. This month, they will be collecting donations of art supplies for the OH WOW! Roger and Gloria Jones Childrens Center for Science and Technology. They are looking for the following items: buttons, beads, plastic sewing needles, thin metal wire, pipe cleaners, chalk, foam stickers, marbles, toothpicks, popsicle crafting sticks, fabric squares, yarn, crayons, glue, highlighters, markers, pencils with erasers, craft paper, construction paper, card board, straws, clothespins, plastic tubing, googly eyes, aluminum foil, Sizzle original dies, Mega Blocks Legos, potting soil, seeds, large and small Ziplock bags and Styrofoam balls. Upcoming events include March 8 - Burke Design Room Makeover in a Day, where they will also be collecting donations of canned food and dry goods for Operation Blessing, and April 12 at Myrddin Winery. The group believes that communities are strengthened by building friendships, welcoming newcomers and promoting fellowship. The Newcomers Club of Canfield was formed to provide an opportunity for members of the community in and around Canfield, to develop friendships, welcome newcomers and to help support the civic, social and charitable life of the community. It is further formed to engage in recreational and social activities in support of these purposes.

From the garden

Fellows Riverside Gardens will host a demonstration and tasting with Chef David Armstrong. Armstrong will create a meal that you wi;; want to share with friends to warm your heart and theirs. Dine on tomato crostinis, an endive, apple and orange salad, and herb-crusted salmon filet that is paired with a specialty beverage. The cost is $36 ($30 for FFRG members) and you must register and pay by Feb. 7.

Twenty-eight day detox seminar

The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center in Boardman will be hosting a free natural health seminar titled ”28 Day Detox” on Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. Join Dr. Ted Suzelis, ND and Valentina Khoury Dubasic ND, LAc for an informative seminar about the Ohio Naturopathic 28 Day Detox challenge. MCCTC is now accepting applications for 2016-2017

Students interested in attending the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center for the 2016-2017 school year can now apply. The application is available for sophomore students on the school’s website. Current students do not need to reapply. The school offers 23 programs and has a limited number of seats per program. Knitting guild to meet Feb. 9

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. Marlyn Ibele will instruct a program on a provisional cast on. A mystery knit along will also be presented, along with a trunk show by Gwen Erin Natural Fibers of Hubbard. East High class of 1966 reunion

The East High class of 1966 has begun making plans for their 50th reunion. They are looking for up-to-date addresses from all classmates who would like to attend. The event is planned for Sept. 2 from 6-10 p.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Hall on the East Side. There will be a buffet dinner and music provided by a DJ. The cost to attend is $40 per person. Scout Sunday services and 106th anniversary of Scouting breakfast

The public is invited to join Cub Scout Pack 25 and Boy Scout Troop 25 for breakfast as they recognize the 106th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America on Feb. 7 from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Canfield United Methodist Church, located at 27 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Prepared and served by the members of the pack and troop, the menu will consist of pancakes and sausage, scrambled eggs, toast, orange juice, milk or coffee, all for a donation for your breakfast. Tickets are not required. The members of both Cub Scout Pack 25 and Boy Scout Troop 25 will also be participating in the Scout Sunday service at the church for the 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services with the Pastor Rev. Susan Brown giving the message.

Lord of Life has Wednesday Lenten services

Mid-week Lenten services at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, will take place Wednesday evenings Feb. 17 through March 16. All services will begin at 7 p.m. The theme is “To live among God’s faithful people.” The focus for each week is a portion of the baptism covenant from the order for Affirmation of Baptism. A different Lutheran pastor will give the sermon each week as follows: Feb. 17 - Pastor Rebecca Zielke’s theme will be “To proclaim the Good News of God in Christ through word and deed;” Feb. 24 - Pastor Barbara Bartholomew will preach on “Following the example of Jesus;” March 2 - Pastor Richard Kidd will preach on “To hear the Word of God and to share in the Lord’s Supper;” March 9 - Pastor Duane Jessee’s message will be on ”To strive for justice and peace in all the earth;” March 16 - Pastor David Kumphuis’s message will be “To live among God’s faithful people.” All are welcome.

Lord of Life has Ash Wednesday service

Lord of Life Lutheran Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield will have an Ash Wednesday service and holy communion on Feb 10. Imposition of ashes and a service of Holy Communion will take place at noon and 7 p.m.

Mill Creek Champter of ABWA to meet

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will host its Feb. 9 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The guest speaker will be Dr. Friedrich Koknat, Youngstown State University professor emeritus in chemistry, who will be narrating on Love Stamps as he is a representative of the Mahoning Valley Stamp Club. Networking begins at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be creamed chicken on biscuits, roast beef, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, salads, bread and butter and beverages and Valentine cream pastry for dessert. Canfield student named to Deans Honor Roll

Kristen Nicole Stahl of Canfield has earned a place on the fall 2015 Deans Honor Roll at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kan. The Deans Honor Roll includes undergraduate students only. To be eligible, students must have completed 12 or more credit hours and have a minimum grade point average of 3.60 for the semester. Full-time on-campus and FHSU Virtual College students are eligible.

Canfield Lions fish fry

The Canfield Lions will host a carry out Fish Fry on Feb. 12 at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. The cost is $11 and minimal seating is available. Dinner will run from 4:30-7:30 p.m. The main course is haddock, baked or fried, with the choice of one side (french fries, pierogis, macaroni and cheese or haluski). This includes cole slaw or green beans, roll, drink and dessert.

Lenton breakfasts begin on Ash Wednesday

Canfield Christian Church will host a series of Lenten breakfasts starting on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 7-9 a.m. each week. The meals are free, but any free-will offerings are accepted. The church’s phone number is 330-533-2246. The church is located next to the Oddfellows Lodge at 123 S. Broad St. on the Village green.

Coalmer earns 2015 Fall Semester Dean’s List recognition

Madeleine Coalmer of Canfield has been named to the 2015 fall semester Dean’s List at Ohio Wesleyan University. To earn Dean’s List recognition, Ohio Wesleyan students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale in all applicable classes.

Bosze named to University of Evansville Dean’s List

Victoria Bosze of Canfield has achieved a place on the University of Evansville Dean’s List for academic achievements during the Fall Semester 2015. To make the Dean’s List, a student at UE must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Local students named to 2015 Fall Dean’s List

Canfield students that have been named to the Dean’s List for the Fall 2015 semester at the University of Mount Union are Olivia DeMartino, Cristina Gelonese, Emma Kilbreath, Bryan Kristan, Anthony Mehle, Alyssa Rafoth, Natalie Ricciutti, Thomas Simko, Brianna Slemons, Jessica Sopkovich, Tyler Syms, Rachel Tinkey, Quinn Whitehead, Michael Yakim, Joseph Yobi and William Yobi. To be eligible for Dean’s List, students must have completed at least 12 credit hours of traditionally graded coursework while achieving a grade point average of 3.550 or better with no grade below a B.

Helping Hands has winter clearance

Helping Hands Closet at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield, is starting its winter clearance sale in February. Everything in the shop will be $2 each. Not included are jewelry and orchid tickets (spring). Helping Hands is open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. each Tuesday.

GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Gathering Place event scheduled for Feb. 8

There will be a Gathering Place event at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad St. in Canfield, on Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. There will be a presentation by Attourney Elizabeth Bernard, the topic of which is still to be announced. Lunch will be provided by The Woodlands. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens, and it takes place on the second Monday of every month. Different games and activities are offered each month.

Mahoning Valley Ulster Project hosts Wine Taste event

The Mahoning Valley Ulster Project is set to host its annual Wine Taste on Feb. 14 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield from 2-5 p.m. This is a major fundraiser for the Ulster Project. Tickets to the event are $30 per person or $50 per couple, and include a wine and beer taste, light appetizers, a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle and giveaways. The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program, which brings together teen leaders from Northern Ireland and the United States. The program offers spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground they share despite religious differences. Each year, Valley families play host to more than a dozen Northern Irish teens for this enriching experience. The Bistro at MCCTC announces new winter and spring schedule

Student-operated restaurant, The Bistro at MCCTC, is open to the public Tuesdays-Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for dine in or carry out through the spring. The Bistro is run by students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. This gives students the chance to gain experience in all facets of working in the restaurant industry, from working as kitchen staff, line cooks and the Sous Chef to waiting tables and hosting. The Bistro schedule is as follows: Feb. 9-11, 17, 18 and March 1-3, 8-10, 15-17.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to proudly serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital on Feb. 19 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Taking blood donations to help the community. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Blood pressure check

There will be a free blood pressure check by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association at the Canfield library from 1-2 p.m. on Feb. 16.

Lego my library

Meet at 6 p.m. on Feb. 24 and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, age 6 and up.

‘I Love My New Canfield Library’ fundraising event

The Friends of PLYMC’s Canfield Committee will host an “I Love My New Canfield Library” fundraiser at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon Street in Canfield on Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person. This includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, chocolate desserts, raffle and cash bar. For information or ticket reservations, contact the Development Office at 330-740-6086. Healthy relationships and boundaries

Creating boundaries is a good way to keep your relationships healthy and secure, whether between a parent and their child, two parents, a parent and a teacher, a child and their friends or between significant others. This Now You Know talk on Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library will examine the importance of these boundaries of all ages, how to establish them and the positive results of having them. Jar up the winter at the Canfield library on Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. with Mason Jar Snow Globes. The library will provide the trees and snow to make a tiny winter wonderland, no water necessary. This event is for adults and teens. You must register so they have supplies for everyone.

Nonfiction book club

If you think that “truth is stranger than fiction,” drop in on the Canfield library’s nonfiction book club on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. Hear about what others are reading and share your story. The book you read is your choice. This event is for adults.

The Canfield Friends of PLYMC women’s book discussion will meet on Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. The group meets every third Tuesday of the month and is for adults.

The Friends of PLYMC Canfield Friends Committee will meet on Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. Meetings take place on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room. This event is for adults.

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thursday in February at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning every Wednesday in February at 10 a.m. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.
