Diva Donations opens for girls in need

Diva Donations, a formal clothing closet where girls can borrow a gown shoes and jewelry in exchange for a small deposit of $25, which is partially refunded when items are returned or full deposit returned when one hour of community service is provided in the Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull county areas to any 501c3 charity (documentation required) will be open for homecoming, winter formal and sweethearts dances on Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. until noon. No prom wear will be going out at this time. The first prom appointments will be the last week in Febuary. Diva Donations is located at 11836 South Ave. in North Lima.

Boardman Jazz to play with the Buddy Rich Band

The Boardman High School Jazz Program and Hubbard Music, along with the generous support of Compco Industries, will host the world-famous Buddy Rich Big Band at Edward W. Powers Auditorium on March 19 at 7 p.m. This band features Emmy Award winning drummer Gregg Potter, and Cathy Rich, Buddy Rich’s daughter, is hosting the evening and singing. BHS Jazz Ensemble 1 will play an opening set that will include at least one Buddy Rich tune that the Rich band is not planning to play that evening. A VIP package is available that includes special seating, a meet-and-greet, merchandise discounts and admission to the Boardman High School Jazz Fest on March 21.

Mill Creek Champter of ABWA to meet

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will host its Feb. 9 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The guest speaker will be Dr. Friedrich Koknat, Youngstown State University professor emeritus in chemistry, who will be narrating on Love Stamps as he is a representative of the Mahoning Valley Stamp Club. Networking begins at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be creamed chicken on biscuits, roast beef, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, salads, bread and butter and beverages and Valentine cream pastry for dessert. Fellows Riverside Gardens will host a demonstration and tasting with Chef David Armstrong. Armstrong will create a meal that you wi;; want to share with friends to warm your heart and theirs.

Dine on tomato crostinis, an endive, apple and orange salad, and herb-crusted salmon filet that is paired with a specialty beverage. The cost is $36 ($30 for FFRG members) and you must register and pay by Feb. 7.

Twenty-eight day detox seminar

The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center in Boardman will be hosting a free natural health seminar titled ”28 Day Detox” on Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. Join Dr. Ted Suzelis, ND and Valentina Khoury Dubasic ND, LAc for an informative seminar about the Ohio Naturopathic 28 Day Detox challenge.

MCCTC is now accepting applications for 2016-2017

Students interested in attending the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center for the 2016-2017 school year can now apply. The application is available for sophomore students on the school’s website. Current students do not need to reapply. The school offers 23 programs and has a limited number of seats per program. Knitting guild to meet Feb. 9

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. Marlyn Ibele will instruct a program on a provisional cast on. A mystery knit along will also be presented, along with a trunk show by Gwen Erin Natural Fibers of Hubbard. Local students named to 2015 Fall Dean’s List

Boardman students that have been named to the Dean’s List for the Fall 2015 semester at the University of Mount Union are Alexandria Baklarz, Jenna Bluedorn, Leah Conaway, Joseph Decapita, Sarah Filipovich, Jena Finch, Sarah Gonda, Nathan Knaus, Aaron Skeens, Justyne Smith and Michael Stash. To be eligible for Dean’s List, students must have completed at least 12 credit hours of traditionally graded coursework while achieving a grade point average of 3.550 or better with no grade below a B.

GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Mahoning Valley Ulster Project hosts Wine event

The Mahoning Valley Ulster Project is set to host its annual Wine Taste on Feb. 14 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield from 2-5 p.m. This is a major fundraiser for the Ulster Project. Tickets to the event are $30 per person or $50 per couple, and include a wine and beer taste, light appetizers, a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle and giveaways. The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program, which brings together teen leaders from Northern Ireland and the United States. The program offers spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground they share despite religious differences. Each year, Valley families play host to more than a dozen Northern Irish teens for this enriching experience. MCCTC receives Pathways Grant

The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center has received the Advanced Career Pathways Grant For Clean Energy Technology for the 2016-17 school year. This grant is provided by the Ohio Department of Education and the Southern Regional Education Board’s High Schools That Work, supporting new career-tech programs relevant to the 21st century workplace. Each four-course Advanced Career pathway curriculum is rich with hands-on projects that stimulate students and help them understand the relationship between theory and application. Advanced Career combines college-ready core academic content with hands-on, project-based assignments centered on a defined career focus. The grant money will go towards new equipment, professional development for staff and Clean Energy Technology curriculum for the new ninth and tenth-grade STEM school opening in the 2016-17 school year.

Mercy Health offers free workshop

Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, will offer a one-hour workshop, Health at Home, on Feb. 16 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, located at 8401 Market Street in Boardman. The morning session runs from 11 a.m. until noon in the Woodland Room. The workshop and all materials are free, but reservations are required. Call 330-480-3070 to make reservations. The workshop includes an easy-to-use reference guide that provides information about more than 200 common health problems, as well as tips on caring for yourself and your family, preventing illness and injury, and advice on when to seek medical attention. Health at Home workshops will also be offered at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital on March 17.

Local students named to the Dean’s List at Miami University

Miami University students who achieved a 3.5 or better grade point average for first semester 2015-2016 have been named to the dean’s list recognizing academic performance. Students from Boardman to earn this honor were Carly Gemma and Jonathan Ouimet.

Kent State names Fall 2015 President’s List

Kent State recently recognized more than 950 undergraduate students who have been named to the President’s list for Fall 2015. Undergraduate students who obtain a 4.00 GPA while maintaining 15 or more credit hours during the fall qualify to receive this honor. Students from Boardman to receive this distinction were Ciara Oslin, Courtney Sage, Kristy Nguyen, Marni Altman and Tara Rogers.

Kiraly named to President’s List

Capital University recently announced that Emily Kiraly of Boardman was named to the President’s List at Capital University for the fall 2015 semester.

BHS French Club helps brighten the holidays

Recently, the French Club of Boardman High School hosted a Canned Food Drive to benefit the Rescue Mission of Youngstown. The drive generated 2,000 pounds of food, almost doubling the amount collected in the previous year. Taking first place in the challenge was Moris Jadue’s second period class, averaging 32 cans per student. The hull was delivered before the students left for their winter break. According to workers at the rescue mission, the French Club provided items that were “exactly what they needed” to help families this holiday season.

East High class of 1966 reunion

The East High class of 1966 has begun making plans for their 50th reunion. They are looking for up-to-date addresses from all classmates who would like to attend. The event is planned for Sept. 2 from 6-10 p.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Hall on the East Side. There will be a buffet dinner and music provided by a DJ. The cost to attend is $40 per person. Night Owl Story Time

There will be an evening story time for children ages 3-5 on Feb. 16 and 23 at 6 p.m. at the Boardman library. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30-minute program featuring finger plays, stories, and a craft activity.

Sensory Story Time

Join the Boardman library on Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. for a family storytime for children of all ages with a sensory focus. This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. The children will enjoy books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals. Children must attend with an adult. Registration is required. Guarendi to visit Boardman Schools

Ray Guarendi, humorist, clinical psychologist, author, public speaker and nationally syndicated radio host, is coming to the Boardman Schools on March 1 to speak on the topic “You are a better parent than you think.” His experience includes working with school districts, Head Start programs, mental health centers, substance abuse programs, in-patient psychiatric centers, juvenile courts and in private practice. Guarendi has both his own radio show, “The Doctor is In,” as well as a television show entering its fourth season, “Living Right with Dr. Ray.” He has also appeared on national radio and television shows such as Oprah, The 700 Club and CBS This Morning. In addition, Guarendi has written a number of books, with his most well known “You’re a Better Parent Than You Think” currently in its 28th printing. He will be speaking on March 1 at 6 p.m. in the Glenwood Middle School Auditorium. There is no charge for admission.

Lego my library

Meet at 10 a.m. on Feb. 20 and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, age 6 and up.

13th annual Father-Daughter Princess Dance

Boardman Park will be hosting its 13th annual Father-Daughter Princess Dance at the Lariccia Family Community Center. Fathers or father figures who have a daughter(s) ages 5-12 can enjoy a memorable evening of dinner and dancing with their little princesses. The dance will be offered on four nights: Feb. 11 from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 12 from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 13 from 6-9 p.m. and Feb. 14 from 5-8 p.m. This semi-formal dinner dance will include dinner, dancing to DJ music, a professional photo for a keepsake and a lot of dancing. Tickets will go on sale beginning Jan. 11. You may purchase your tickets at the park office, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. or by calling the office at 330-726-8105. Black History Month puzzle challenge

Find the answers to trivia questions during the month of February at the Boardman library throughout regular library hours that relate to Black History Month. For each question you get right, you’ll get a puzzle piece to add to our puzzle. See if you can finish the puzzle by the end of the month. This event is for children of all ages.

Fitness Fun story time

Join the Boardman library on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. for stories and activities selected from the “Eat, Play, Grow” program. This event will focus on good fun and good nutrition. Prizes and snacks will be given. This event is sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Kids Coalition and is for toddlers and preschoolers.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library every Tuesday in February at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Boardman library every Wednesday in February at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Game Stations

No plans for your day off of school on Feb. 15? Children of all ages can visit the Boardman library’s Game Stations throughout regular library hours. There will be numerous tables of games set up that you can travel around to and play. Bring your family and friends and enjoy a day of games.
