OSHA investigates death of worker at GM plant in Defiance

DEFIANCE, Ohio (AP) — The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the death of a worker at a General Motors plant in northwestern Ohio.

The agency said in a statement today that it is investigating the report of a 50-year-old electrician’s death Tuesday at a GM plant in Defiance. OSHA says initial reports indicate the worker died from injuries received when he fell about 25 to 30 feet into a pit while performing maintenance and troubleshooting on an overhead crane.

GM said in a statement that an employee died Tuesday afternoon at GM’s Defiance Casting Operations. The worker’s identity wasn’t immediately released, and the company provided no details on how the death occurred.

OSHA says it will investigate to determine whether any violations of safety rules or regulations contributed to the death.
