U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan raised nearly $200,000 in the last three months of 2015
YOUNGSTOWN
U.S. Reps. Tim Ryan and Bill Johnson are raising money for their re-election bids while their challengers have yet to file paperwork needed when receiving at least $5,000 in contributions.
Between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, Ryan, of Howland, D-13th, raised $199,226 to bring his 2015 total to $656,221, according to his latest report with the Federal Election Commission. Of the money raised in the fourth quarter of last year, $144,601 came from individuals and $54,625 came from political action committees.
Among those giving Ryan the maximum $5,400 for this election cycle during the last three months of the year are William E. Phillips, owner of Niles Expanded Metals; Martin G. Solomon, president of B&I Management Co. of Mineral Ridge, Edward J. Reese, a former Mahoning County commissioner and owner of EDM Management of Boardman; and Bruce Zoldan, president and chief executive officer of B.J. Alan Co. of Youngstown.
Ryan spent $134,753 during the final three months of 2015, and $517,836 for the year. He had $570,342 in his campaign fund as of Dec. 31 largely because of money he carried over from previous years.
During the last three months of 2015, Ryan’s campaign paid for a $563 stay at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in New York City, and a $329 bill at a Holiday Inn in Portsmouth, N.H., presumedly to campaign on behalf of Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid. He also listed a $260 campaign meal at a Des Moines, Iowa, restaurant, also likely for a visit to the state in support of Clinton.
Among Ryan’s campaign expenses is a $114 bill for a stay at the Fairfield Inn in Howland, less than 1.5 miles from the congressman’s home.
Neither John Stephen Luchansky of Boardman, Ryan’s Democratic primary challenger, nor Richard A. Morckel of Akron, his Republican opponent in the November general election, filed with the FEC. An FEC spokeswoman said if a candidate doesn’t raise at least $5,000, that person isn’t required to submit a report.
Johnson raised $134,942 during the final quarter of 2015, and $959,396 for the year. Between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, Johnson of Marietta, R-6th, received $109,500 from PACs and the rest from individuals.
Among those giving $5,000 to Johnson were the Air Line Pilots Association PAC of Washington, D.C.; Dealers Election Action Committee (auto dealers) of McLean, Va.; Marathon Oil Company Employees PAC of Findlay; and the Eye of the Tiger PAC of Springfield, Va., affiliated with U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican.
Johnson loaned $15,000 to his campaign Sept. 30, and was repaid that amount Oct. 14.
Johnson spent $121,868 during the final three months of 2015, and $562,621 for the entire year.
He has $926,951 in his account as of Dec. 31, including money raised in previous years.
His most-recent campaign finance report includes expenses for a campaign event in New York City, and an $1,150 hotel expense at The Liaison in Washington. Johnson’s report also lists a $4,330 expense for “campaign event catering” from a restaurant in Dallas, and $280 for a “campaign meeting expense” in New York City.
Belpre Mayor Michael L. Lorentz, Johnson’s Democratic challenger, hasn’t established a campaign fund, an FEC spokeswoman said.
