Parent of man accused of robbing bank says he's mentally ill

CAMPBELL — A preliminary hearing has been set for Feb. 9 for a 26-year-old man facing a felony aggravated robbery charge in connection with a bank robbery Monday afternoon.

A teller at Huntington Bank on McCartney Road told police the man placed a bag and a note on the counter.

The note said, "I have a boom [sic]. I want $10,000," according to a police report.

The teller then said she did not have $10,000, prompting the man to demand all the money she had.

The man then fled on foot after the teller gave him cash, according to the report.

It was later discovered that the only thing in the bag was a Bible, police said.

Police reported apprehending the man, who was running, near the Four Seasons Flea Market on McCartney Road.

The man had $1,000 in his pocket and told officers "voices told him to do it," police reported.

The man's mother said at his arraignment Tuesday that her son is mentally ill.
