Lions Club program collects glasses for needy

Dear Heloise: I saw a hint in your column about saving the tiny screws from old eyeglasses before discarding. Instead, please consider donating old glasses, broken or not, to Lions Club International.

Used glasses that are broken are taken apart, the parts inventoried and cataloged, and then are used to refurbish glasses. Lenses are polished and given to people around the world who have limited resources or access to vision care. Many optometrists’ offices have a Lions Club recycling box in their office. Dear Heloise: At lunch with friends, chips and salsa were placed on the table. My meal included a taco, which I wanted to put salsa on, but there was not a spoon at the table.

A friend grabbed a chip, dipped it in the salsa and “spooned” it onto my taco. I had to share this hint.

Dear Heloise: I wanted to put furniture slider pads under a heavy cabinet, and my husband was nowhere in sight. I didn’t wish to empty the cabinet to make it light enough to stick the pads on the bottom of it.

It then occurred to me to use the car jack – it’s very lightweight and easy to use. And I learned where it was located in the vehicle and how to work it. I hope I never have to use it on the car, but I know where it is and how it works!

Well, Jodie, you are lucky in many ways. Most new cars have no car jack! Readers, better check, and if you are driving a new car, know that it may come with a can of tire inflator rather than a spare tire.

Dear Heloise: Here’s a hint now that cooler weather is upon us: Save your paper towels’ inner cardboard (or even wrapping-paper rolls). When you have two or three, band them together with a rubber band or tape. Stick them into boots for an inexpensive way to keep your boots upright.

Dear Heloise: After using shampoo and conditioner during my shower, I aim the bottle’s opening toward the spraying water for a second to rinse off the excess. No more gunked-up dispensers!
