The world is still processing the sudden death of actress Carrie Fisher this week. With a big personality, a history of addiction and a long, varied show- business career, here’s a taste of her Hollywood life and times:

v Hollywood royalty: Her mom was Debbie Reynolds and her dad the late crooner Eddie Fisher. They divorced when she was 2 after her dad decamped to marry Elizabeth Taylor. Suffering from mental illness, and drug and alcohol addiction during much of her life, Fisher became an outspoken advocate for those issues.

v “Star Wars”: Who can forget that cinnamon-bun hairdo as Princess Leia in the original trilogy, from 1977 to 1983. She later reprised the role, including a turn in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” last year.

v “Shampoo”: Before Star Wars was “Shampoo” of 1975, starring Warren Beatty as a Beverly Hills hairdresser. She was Lorna Karpf and her mom reportedly wasn’t thrilled about the character’s use of profanity.

v “Postcards from the Edge”: This 1990 film directed by Mike Nichols was based on a screenplay she wrote, which was based on her 1987 semi-autobiographical novel of the same title. Meryl Streep starred as movie actress Suzanne Vale, looking to rebuild her life after a drug overdose.

v “Wishful Drinking”: It’s the title of her one-woman stage show and autobiography. A version of the stage production hit HBO in 2010. She followed up this year with a memoir, “The Princess Diarist,” based on diaries she kept while filming the original “Star Wars” trilogy.

“A Toast to 2016!” (8 p.m., NBC): Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb offer up “A Toast to 2016!” It’s a two-hour special that looks back on the “buzziest” stories from the past 12 months. Their guests include Arnold Schwarzenegger, Simone Biles and Dana Carvey.

New Year’s Eve celebrations: There’s no shame in staying home to party in front of your TV, as long as you clean up the confetti by February. Leading off the night is “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest” (8 p.m., ABC), which features performances by Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan, Thomas Rhett and more. Other shows helping to kick 2016 to the curb include “New Year’s Eve Live With Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin” (8 p.m., CNN), “Pitbull’s New Year’s Revolution” (11 p.m., Fox) and “New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly” (11:30 p.m., NBC). Pitbull’s Miami-based show is co-hosted by Queen Latifah and Snoop Dogg. Daly’s guests in New York include Jennifer Lopez, Blake Shelton and Alicia Keys.
