Seeking office

NILES

Atty. Christopher Shaker will file nominating petitions at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Trumbull County Board of Elections seeking to be elected Niles Municipal Court judge for the term beginning in 2018.

A Niles native, Shaker, 58, will run in the May 2 Democratic primary. He has been practicing law since 1983 in downtown Niles at the same location as his father, the late Judge Mitchell Shaker of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. He and his brother, Robert Shaker, have been partners at the Shaker & Shaker Law Firm for 30 years.

In his career, he has been an assistant county prosecutor, represented Weathersfield and McDonald school districts and was a juvenile prosecutor.

He serves as an acting judge in the Niles Municipal Court on behalf of the current judge, Thomas Townley, who will retire at the end of 2017 after 30 years on the bench.

The court serves the city of Niles, Weathersfield Township and the village of McDonald.

New magistrate

YOUNGSTOWN

Judge Theresa Dellick of Mahoning County Juvenile Court has chosen Assistant Juvenile Prosecutor Carla Baldwin to be the court’s next magistrate.

Baldwin will take the place of Anthony D’Apolito, who was sworn in Wednesday as a new common pleas court judge. She will resign her position in the prosecutor’s office and begin her new duties Thursday.

Judge Dellick said D’Apolito will be greatly missed and he will excel as a common pleas court judge, but she expects Baldwin to do a great job.

“The court will be well-served with her as Anthony D’Apolito’s successor,” Judge Dellick said in a statement. “Carla Baldwin brings with her a wealth of legal experience and the right judicial temperament to the bench.”

BELOIT

The West Branch Board of Education voted 5-0 this week to hire David Drawl as its next treasurer.

Drawl, who lives in Cortland, serves on the Maplewood schools board of education and is a graduate of Youngstown State University. He was chosen from a field of 10 applicants. The board narrowed the field to five individuals for first-round interviews, and then to two finalists.

He signed a three-year contract and will begin his duties Tuesday. His salary is $72,500 a year.
