Girard seeks chief
GIRARD
Capt. John Norman has been acting chief of the Girard Police Department for several weeks, replacing Jeff Palmer, who has accepted a position as a major in charge of the criminal and civil divisions at the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office.
Palmer begins his new duties at the same time as Paul Monroe, who takes office as sheriff Monday.
Palmer became Girard chief in March 2009 after serving with the department 20 years, nine of those as a captain.
Mayor James Melfi said Palmer has been using up accrued time off since early December. The Girard Civil Service Commission will begin the process in January of selecting a permanent chief.
Dog owner charged
GIRARD
The owner of a pit bull that killed another dog and injured two people before being shot by police Tuesday afternoon is facing charges.
Courtney Chupka, the dog’s owner, will answer to charges of violating Girard’s ordinance prohibiting the keeping of vicious dogs.
Chupka maintains the dog was cleared for adoption as a pet by staff at the Mahoning County dog pound.
Application supported
WARREN
The Trumbull County commissioners this week adopted a resolution of support for Howland Township’s application for Clean Ohio Fund money for a wetland acquisition program.
If successful, the grant will allow the township to acquire a 65-acre area in the Golden Triangle industrial area of Howland Township. The Golden Triangle is bounded roughly by North Park Avenue, the state Route 5 Bypass and Elm Road.
The township will preserve about 30 acres of wetlands to prevent flooding that occurs near several factories, including Liberty Steel and Trumbull Industries.
