Suspects sought after 7 shot at NC Christmas party

MADISON, N.C.

Two suspects were being tracked down Sunday after North Carolina investigators say seven people were shot during a private Christmas party attended by hundreds of people.

None of the victims appeared to suffer life-threatening injuries after being shot early Saturday at a Moose Lodge in Madison, about 25 miles north of Greensboro, deputies said. The two men were still at large Sunday, and no other details were being made public, Rockingham County Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Kevin Suthard said.

1 killed by typhoon in the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines

A typhoon that spoiled Christmas Day in parts of the Philippines weakened slightly today as it roared toward a congested region near the country’s capital, officials said.

They said Typhoon Nock-Ten killed at least one person, cut power to five provinces, and displaced thousands of villagers and travelers in Asia’s Catholic bastion.

A farmer died after being pinned by a fallen tree in Quezon province southeast of Manila a few hours after the typhoon slammed into the country Sunday night. It then blew westward across mountainous and island provinces, damaging homes, uprooting trees and knocking down communications, according to officials and local news reports.

National emergency director Ricardo Toro told a news conference that some 4,000 people were evacuated for fear of a possible tsunami after the quake, but the alert was eased about 90 minutes after the temblor.
