Staff report

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA.

Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, will offer these events this week and in January:

The winter wonder walk will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The event will feature some family-friendly, free-wheeling discovery along the trails.

The first-day hike will take place at 1 p.m. Jan. 1. Led by Jennings staff and assistants, the hike will cover just under 2 miles on Jennings’ longest trail, Oakwoods. The route will traverse varied terrain and pass through several different habitats, including the prairie, the forest and an area influenced by beaver activity. The hike is rated “easy” for those who are able to cover the distance and some sloping areas under winter conditions.

Prairie Improvement Day will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 21. The Jennings staff is looking for individuals willing to spend a Saturday morning outdoors to help manage the unique prairie ecosystem. For lunch, local restaurants will provide warm, hearty soup. Each participant will receive a commemorative soup mug as a thank you.
