YOUNGSTOWN

A recently released Youngstown police report reveals more details about a teacher accused of assaulting a student Monday afternoon.

According to the report, an elementary school student in the Programs of Promise at Wilson School who was in in-school suspension for being disruptive proceeded to act out by not listening and refusing to do his work.

The student then proceeded to sit on his hands on the floor so the teacher wouldn’t be able to restrain him, reports said.

When the student attempted to leave the room at an unspecified time, the teacher grabbed him by the ankles and tried to pull him back into the room, but let go during the process, causing the student to hit his face on a nearby wall.

Reports said about 2 p.m. Monday, the student’s mother and grandmother, teacher and principal had a meeting in which the teacher apologized by saying, “I didn’t mean for that to happen, and I’m sorry that he got injured.”

The student was taken to St. Elizabeth Diagnostic Center in Austintown to be checked out after the student said he blacked out during the altercation.

The injury is described in the report as a “slight abrasion.”

The incident was reported to police at 10:40 p.m.

Denise Dick, a Youngstown City School District spokeswoman, said the investigation is ongoing, and the school district does not have all the facts yet.

“It’s the district’s policy not to comment on ongoing investigations,” she said.

The Vindicator made a public- records request to view the teacher’s personnel file. That request is not expected to be acted upon until next week.
