One Man’s Dream: 125 Years of Mill Creek

When: Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., through Dec. 31.

What: Take a trip back through the last century and a quarter as you rediscover Mill Creek Park. Stroll inside the Davis Center to see your favorite iconic park structures, the annual holiday tree walk, a student-led Chihuly-inspired display and seasonal blooms.

Where: Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave., Youngstown.

Ford Hunt & Hike

When: Today, Saturday, Tuesday, Wednesday and next Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What: Stop by Ford Nature Center to locate 25 images of Mill Creek Park founder Volney Rogers, hidden to commemorate the park district’s 125th anniversary. Then go for a hike of your choice and enjoy the winter beauty of his legacy during December, the month of Rogers’ birth and death.

Where: Ford Nature Center, 840 Old Furnace Road, Youngstown.

Cost: Free

Winter Scavenger Hunt

When: Wednesday, 1-3 p.m.

What: Get the family out of the house this holiday season for a hike to look for Mother Nature’s hidden treasures. Then come inside to warm up with hot chocolate.

Details: Moderate level of difficulty, 2.25 mi.

Where: Ford Nature Center, 840 Old Furnace Road, Youngstown.

Cost: Free

It’s for the Birds!

When: Dec. 31, 10 a.m.-noon.

What: Share the joy of the season by lending a hand to our over-wintering feathered friends. We’ll create edible bird ornaments using pinecones and other natural materials to decorate a pine tree outside the center.

Where: Ford Nature Center, 840 Old Furnace Road.

Men’s Garden Club Talk

When: Jan. 4, 7-8 p.m.

What: The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown invites you to attend their general meeting, which includes topics by local and regional speakers on horticulture and nature.

Caught in Time

When: Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., through Feb. 16.

What: Celebrate the 125th anniversary of beautiful and historic Mill Creek Park and honor the vision and efforts of its founder, Volney Rogers. The exhibit features the best of local nature photographer C. Scott Lanz’s thousands of photographs taken in the park over the last 15 years.
