Iowa man hit by car that leaves the scene

WARREN

Arteum P. Brodeur, 23, of Ankeny, Iowa, suffered incapacitating injuries and was taken by ambulance Tuesday night to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital after being hit by a car that left the scene.

A Warren police report says Brodeur was crossing Chestnut Street Northeast near East Market Street at 6:42 p.m. when he was hit.

A vehicle making a southbound turn onto Chestnut from Market hit Brodeur. Brodeur rolled onto the hood of the car and onto the sidewalk, police said.

The car then fled the scene on Chestnut through the McDonald’s parking lot on South Street. The vehicle was described as a dark blue car, possibly a Honda four-door with a white male driver.

Man faces 8 years after burglary conviction

WARREN

Hargus D. Hall, 34, of Knapp Drive in Cortland, was convicted at trial Wednesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court of burglary and will be sentenced after the county adult probation department conducts a presentence investigation.

He could get up to eight years in prison.

Hall was charged after a resident of Mahan Denman Road in Mecca Township came home Dec. 10, 2015, to see a car in his driveway that he did not recognize.

Then the front door of his house opened, and a man he would later identify as Hall came out. The resident asked Hall what he was doing, and Hall asked the man if he had a four-wheeler for sale.

The victim let the suspect leave but called 911, and a police officer determined that the license plate belonged to Hall. The resident later reported that a tablet computer had been taken from his home.

Potential House session

COLUMBUS

The Republican leader of the Ohio House was noncommittal on the possibility that lawmakers would return to session before the end of the year to override vetoes from Gov. John Kasich.

House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, R-Clarksville, said any potential session would have to take place between Christmas and New Year’s Day – veto overrides would have to be done by the current general assembly before the end of the year.

“We’re going to continue to have conversations, see where things go and how things continue to move forward, and if we feel like we need to come back, we’ll come back,” he said Wednesday.

Kasich last week used his line-item veto authority to strike Heartbeat Bill language from separate legislation. The provisions would have banned abortions within weeks of conception. Backers have been actively campaigning for the state Legislature to reconvene to override the governor’s rejection.

Ex-UPS worker steals

BOARDMAN

A family won’t pursue criminal charges against a former UPS employee for taking $650 from Christmas cards an elderly woman was sending money to her grandchildren.

According to a police report filed Tuesday, the 82-year-old woman’s son told police that on Dec. 1 she provided an employee at the UPS store at 143 Boardman-Canfield Road with ornaments and Christmas cards containing $50 for each of her 13 grandchildren. Employees packaged them in the back of the store.

Her grandchildren received the ornaments, but none of them received the money.

The woman’s son told police he informed UPS of the incident. He was reimbursed, and the store owner said an employee who admitted to the theft was fired.
