Dog-tethering ordinance

POLAND

Village Council members approved an emergency dog-tethering ordinance Tuesday night. The ordinance starts immediately, prohibiting the tethering of dogs between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. during extreme weather conditions. Violations will be a misdemeanor. Animal-rights advocate Jason Cooke first proposed the ordinance earlier this year. No action was taken until he returned in October to renew his proposal.

Council also approved erecting a stop sign on the southwest corner of the intersection of Renwick Drive and Tenth Street. Poland Township will install and pay for the sign, first proposed to council by township Trustee Joanne Wollet Nov. 15. The corner is the only part of the four-way intersection located in the village and the township wants to install a stop sign there for traffic safety. The other three corners, all of which are located in the township, already have stop signs.

Bicycling bill now law

COLUMBUS

Gov. John Kasich has signed into law a bill requiring motorists to allow at least 3 feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist on a road. The legislation also allows cyclists at an intersection where the traffic-control signal is malfunctioning to follow the same procedures that apply to an intersection directed by stop signs. Ohio House Bill 154, signed Monday, will take effect in 90 days.
