Stepan art exhibit at Outreach Gallery

NILES

An exhibition of works by Youngstown artist Bruce Stepan Jr. is on display at the Art Outreach Gallery inside Eastwood Mall, through Jan. 8. Titled “Remixing Imagination,” the exhibition includes works created by the artist since 2011.

All artwork is for sale with all proceeds going to the artist.

Born and raised in Youngstown, Stepan immersed himself in both horror and comic book culture at an early age, which eventually led him to perform in a number of punk rock bands through high school and college. Learning the syntax of sequential narration, he discovered the nuances of caricature based on offbeat ’90s animated cartoons such as “Ren and Stimpy” and “Beavis and Butthead.”

Stepan earned a bachelor’s degree in studio art at Youngstown State University, and then a master of fine arts degree at Michigan State University. His panel paintings simultaneously echo and parody the works of the Flemish artists.

The gallery is located next to GNC in the JCPenney’s concourse. Hours are 5-9 p.m. Fridays, 1-9 p.m. Saturdays, and 1-5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free.
