Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings
Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. This location is handicapped accessible. On Thursdays at 6 p.m., a meeting will take place in Faith Chapel Fellowship Church, located at 511 E. Pershing St. in Salem, while at 7:30 p.m. a meeting will take place at New Life Lutheran Church, located at 1181 Churchill-Hubbard Road in Youngstown. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. MCCTC students help open local salon
Students in the Culinary, Cosmetology, and Creative Arts programs at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center are assisting three sisters who are opening a salon in Poland with their grand opening on Dec. 17 from 5-7 p.m. Nicci Alevizakis, Cassi Conway and Cari Conway are turning to the students for their insight and help. They have been meeting with them and their instructors to help plan the evening. Icon Studio is located at 3057 Center Road, Suite D, in Poland.
Torch Club meeting to be Dec. 19
Club member Lowell D. Satre will deliver the talk at the Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs dinner-discussion meeting at 7 p.m. on Dec. 19. His topic will be “London on London,” Jack London’s graphic portrayal of urban poverty in 1902. The meeting will be in Kilcawley Center, Bresnahan Room I and II, on the campus of Youngstown State University. The public is invited to attend. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and lecture at 7 p.m. Attending only the lecture is free of charge. Dinner for nonmembers is $20. Historical Society Christmas party
The Poland Historical Society members are invited to the Christmas party on Dec. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (Route 224 and Struthers Road intersection). The main meat, dessert and beverage will be provided by the society and they ask members to bring a side dish, casserole or salad. RSVP to Diane Baughman at 330-536-6877 by Dec. 13. The society has begun their membership drive for 2017. Annual membership dues are $10 per person. Membership dues and donations are vitally important to the society in their efforts to maintain the Little Red Schoohouse museum and to “Preserve the Past for the Future”.
Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Poland library every Thursday in December at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Holy Family Seniors to meet
The Holy Family Seniors Group will meet for their Christmas luncheon on Dec. 19 at the Holy Family Parish Hall, located at 2729 Center Road in Poland. A catered luncheon will be served at 11:45 a.m. The cost is $12 per person, checks made payable to Holy Family Seniors Group may be sent to Laurie Fox, Treasurer, 6656 Lowellville Road, Lowellville, OH 44436 before Dec. 14. Cash payment will also be accepted at the door, but you must RSVP by Dec. 14. Members who would like to participated in a gift exchange should bring a $5 wrapped gift. NSS Christmas party
Local Assembly 731 of the National Slovak Society (NSS Life) will host a Christmas Party for NSS members and their family on Dec. 17 from 2-5 p.m. at the Lowellville Rod and Gun Club, located at 6225 Quarry Road in Lowellville. Santa and Mrs. Clause will arrive at 2:30 p.m. for a visit with the children and will have a gift for each child. Light lunch refreshments will be provided. Each family is asked to bring a plate of cookies to share on the cookie table. Families are also asked to bring items that will be donated to the Mahoning Valley Rescue Mission to help in their efforts to keep the homeless warm this winter such as blankets and winter clothes. Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library every Wednesday in December at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Little ones can add felt decorations to the special holiday tree at the Poland library during library hours in December.
Elf on the bookshelf
During the month of December, visit the Poland library during library hours in December to see all the places and mischief the Elf on the Shelf is getting into. Look for the Elf on the Shelf photos on the Library’s Facebook page and Instagram and add some of your own. This program is for the family.
Gingerbread program
Sip hot chocolate and listen to Christmas music while you build and decorate a miniature gingerbread house using graham crackers, icing, gumdrops and more at the Poland library on Dec. 20 at 6:30 p.m. This event is for children of all ages; children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required, so stop in the Poland library or call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register.
Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie at the Poland library on Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. Roxie is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland Library to register. This program is for grades first through fourth.

Blood drive
Proudly serving the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital, the American Red Cross will be taking blood donations to help our community at the Poland library on Dec. 19 from 12:30-6:30 p.m. and Dec. 30 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Short Fiction Day
Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. Holiday library closings

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit
The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
