Immigration and Customs Enforcement recently awarded CoreCivic’s 2,016-bed Northeast Ohio Correctional Center on the East Side a new contract.

The new contract contains an initial term expiring March 31 with four six-month renewal periods at the option of ICE. CoreCivic, formerly known as Corrections Corp. of America, houses about 600 detainees from the U.S. Marshals Service at the NOCC at 2240 Hubbard Road.

CoreCivic has started to hire additional staff to be able to accommodate up to 500 more detainees over the next several months.

Last year, the company laid off 185 employees because the U.S. Bureau of Prison did not renew its contract, according to The Vindicator files.

Nashville, Tenn.-based CoreCivic provides “a broad range of solutions to government partners that serve the public good through high-quality corrections and detention management, innovative and cost-saving government real-estate solutions, and a growing network of residential reentry centers to help address America’s recidivism crisis,” according to its website.
