Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings
Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. This location is handicapped accessible. On Thursdays at 6 p.m., a meeting will take place in Faith Chapel Fellowship Church, located at 511 E. Pershing St. in Salem, while at 7:30 p.m. a meeting will take place at New Life Lutheran Church, located at 1181 Churchill-Hubbard Road in Youngstown. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. MCCTC students help open local salon
Students in the Culinary, Cosmetology, and Creative Arts programs at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center are assisting three sisters who are opening a salon in Poland with their grand opening on Dec. 17 from 5-7 p.m. Nicci Alevizakis, Cassi Conway and Cari Conway are turning to the students for their insight and help. They have been meeting with them and their instructors to help plan the evening. Icon Studio is located at 3057 Center Road, Suite D, in Poland.
Torch Club meeting to be Dec. 19
Club member Lowell D. Satre will deliver the talk at the Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs dinner-discussion meeting at 7 p.m. on Dec. 19. His topic will be “London on London,” Jack London’s graphic portrayal of urban poverty in 1902. The meeting will be in Kilcawley Center, Bresnahan Room I and II, on the campus of Youngstown State University. The public is invited to attend. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and lecture at 7 p.m. Attending only the lecture is free of charge. Dinner for nonmembers is $20. Drive through chicken dinners to be offered
Drive through chicken dinners will be offered at Lord of Life Church, located at at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on Dec. 22 from 3-6 p.m. The dinners will consist of chicken francaise, rice pilaf, green beans, holiday broccoli salad and a roll with butter. The cost is $9 per dinner (cash only), and the proceeds will help with ministry expenses. Each customer will get $1 off the purchase price if they bring a can of vegetables that will be donated to the needy via the Rescue Mission or some other worthwhile organization. Holiday worship services at Lord of Life Lutheran
On Dec. 17 at 5 p.m., there will be alternative worship; on Dec. 18, there will be service of lessons and carols at 10:15 a.m. with a brunch after worship; on Dec. 24 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., there will be the Christmas Eve service of candlelight and holy communion with the sanctuary choir performing at 7:30 p.m.; on Dec. 25 at 10:15 a.m., there will be Christmas Day worship and holy communion; on Dec. 31 at 5 p.m., there will be alternative worship and on Jan. 1 at 10:15 a.m., there will be worship and holy communion. Child care will be provided for all services.

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thursday in December at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in December at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Gotta move story time
This event is for children, ages 2-5, who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in December at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.
Grab and go craft for December
Make a craft to take home at the Canfield library during library hours in December. This event is for children of all ages.
Gee - I’m-a-tree
Tinker with the science of geometry while creating two different types of winter trees at the Canfield library on Dec. 17 at 11 a.m. One is made from bolts, nuts and fender washers, the other from gumdrops and toothpicks. This event is for children in grades 4-6.
Take a guess
Guess the number of items in the jar at the Canfield library during library hours in December. The closest guess wins a small prize.
Helping Hands has limited time deals
Helping Hands Closet at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield is offering a limited time special on all coats and blazers at 50 percent off and children’s and teen items are currently 70 percent off. Helping Hands is open each Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Celebrate Short Fiction Day
Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. America’s Schoolmaster exhibit
The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
