WARREN

John L. Hazinakis, 30, of Sylvan Street Northwest, pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Warren Municipal Court to misdemeanor child endangering after police said he appeared to have overdosed on drugs while driving his car with his child inside.

Police were called to the intersection of Oak Street and Phillips Drive Southwest for a car backed into a snow bank.

When police arrived, they found Hazinakis’ son, 6, in the back seat trying to shake his father’s head to wake him up.

The father’s pulse was very slow, and he appeared to be not breathing. These are common signs of a drug overdose, so the officer administered the opiate-reversal drug naloxone, the officer said.

Officers continued to administer naloxone a couple more times until ambulance personnel arrived.

The father told police he snorted an unknown substance before driving.

Shot in back, shoulder

WARREN

A man, 21, of Linda Drive Northwest, took himself to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital at 5:39 p.m. Tuesday with a gunshot wound to his back and shoulder.

Police had been dispatched to the 1200 block of Fifth Street Southwest at about that same time for shots fired.

When police interviewed the man at the hospital, he said he did not remember where the shooting occurred and did not know who shot him.

Park Place fire

WARREN

Fire forced 10 people from their homes in the Park Place apartment complex at 1905 Southern Blvd. late Wednesday afternoon. No one was injured.

Warren Fire Department investigators said a fire broke out in one of the apartments shortly before 5 p.m. Firefighters took people to an empty apartment in a nearby building at the complex to stay warm, reported 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner. The Red Cross is helping displaced residents find temporary housing.

An occupant of one of the apartments smelled smoke and called maintenance. A maintenance worker saw smoke coming from the attic of an apartment, called 911, and helped get everyone out of the building.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but it does not appear to be suspicious. A state fire marshal was called in to investigate.

School bus accident

BELOIT

A West Branch School District school bus slid off Smith-Goshen Road after stopping to safely drive across a set of railroad tracks on an incline. All 19 students on board were examined by local EMS after being safely evacuated by the veteran driver and moved to a local residence to avoid the heavy snowfall Tesday, the district said. No one was injured.

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers later arrived and determined no citations would be issued and that the bus showed no visible damage. The bus will be taken out of service and inspected thoroughly before being returned to service.
