Vote expected tonight on Austintown superintendent’s contract

Staff report

AUSTINTOWN

The school board will vote tonight on a renewal of Superintendent Vincent Colaluca’s contract.

The superintendent’s contract has been a hot-button issue in the community the last several months, with a vocal group of district residents protesting his leadership and calling on the board not to renew his contract.

Colaluca’s current five-year contract expires at the end of July.

As the board has considered extending his contract, some community members have spoken up in opposition, citing displeasure with things such as the number of open-enrollment students the district accepts.

At the October school board meeting, which was attended by hundreds, the board received a petition with more than 1,500 signatures from people asking the board not to approve a renewal.

Tonight’s board meeting will begin with a 3 p.m. work session at the central office. The regular meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Austintown Middle School cafeteria.
