PREP ROUNDUP | Recaps of this weekend’s high school games
SATURDAY
WRESTLING
WALSH IRONMAN
CANTON
Canfield senior Georgio Poullas won the 160-pound title at the Walsh Ironman 2016. The tournament brought in some of the top wrestling talent in the nation. Poullas adds the Ironman to his 152-pound state title he won back in March.
“It’s right up there with the state championship,” Poullas said. “If you ask some people, Ironman is the more difficult competition. I had more difficult matches here than I did at state. These were a lot closer.”
Poullas entered the tournament ranked No. 16 in the nation and to win the title, he beat the No. 10, No. 20 and No. 12 wrestlers in the nation after reaching the quarterfinals Friday. Poullas said he didn’t learn about their rankings until he had already defeated them.
As for Poullas’ teammates. Mason Giordano (285) started Saturday in the quarterfinals, but did not place. David Crawford (170) and Tyler Stein (195) did not place.
