Cold, snowy forecast

YOUNGSTOWN

Low temperatures and snow are on the way for Mahoning Valley residents this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, today will have a high near 27 degrees, with winds between 10 and 14 mph. The temperature will drop to about 19 tonight, with wind speeds between 5 and 7 miles per hour.

Eric Wilhelm, chief meteorologist at 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, said snowfall is likely late tonight and into early Sunday morning. Sunday’s high will be near 30, with southeast winds between 6 and 11 mph. Wilhelm said snow is a near certainty Sunday, and the NWS reports possible 1 to 2 inches of accumulation. Temperatures and possible snow accumulation will remain mostly steady throughout Sunday night, while the chance of precipitation will rise to 90 percent.

Precipitation is likely to continue through Sunday night and into Monday morning until about 10 a.m. Wilhelm said morning commuters likely will experience rain rather than snow.

Truck blocks expressway

YOUNGSTOWN

Friday afternoon commuters along a major road in Youngstown may have found some frustration along the highway.

According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, a box truck broke down along the westbound lanes of the Himrod Expressway just east of the Market Street exit.

Since that side of the expressway is already down to one lane due to construction, traffic couldn’t get through.

Police directed traffic away from the area until a towing service could remove the truck.

King-Graves realignment

WARREN

The Trumbull County Engineer’s Office has hired ARCADIS U.S. Inc. to design the proposed realignment of King-Graves Road near the entrance to the Youngstown Air Reserve Station.

A meeting on the project will take place at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Trumbull County commissioners meeting room on the fifth floor of the county administration building, 160 High St. NW.

Discussion will focus on feasible alternatives for the project, which proposes to relocate 1.1 miles of the road between the air base entrance and Ridge Road.

The proposed realignment is to provide additional buffer space between the roadway and the air base to meet US Department of Defense antiterrorism standards and provide area for potential air base expansion, according to engineer Randy Smith.

The study area will be from Ridge Road to state Route 193 in Vienna and Fowler townships.

Housing renovation

WARREN

The nonprofit Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership and Trumbull Career and Technical Center in Champion have completed the first housing renovation in a new partnership between the two organizations.

TNP and students in the Maintenance/Construction Trades program renovated a long-vacant home on Orlo Street Northwest and identified someone to buy the property at a reduced price while agreeing to live in the home at least three years.

The project allowed students to receive hands-on training while helping TNP reduce blight, said Shawn Carvin, TNP Land Bank program director.
